highlyeccentric: Sign on Little Queen St - One Way both directions (theses will eat me)

Well, folks...

I have a thesis.

It is 20200 words, including bibliography and other faffing about. It is 96 pages long, and it has a frontispiece, a title page, acknowledgements and a table of contents. Also I somehow managed to edit all of it last weekend AND write big chunks of the third chapter AND write the conclusion.

It is now in the hands of Awesome, who, being awesome, is editing it for me. I am very glad she gave me a deadline of Monday by which to have it in her inbox, or I don't doubt I'd have been awake until 5am next Sunday-Monday, and since the bastard thing is due next Monday, that would have been bad.

I *may* also have sorted out my grudge against the Sermo Lupi ad Anglos. If we're lucky.

~

In other news... I've been spamming all my own blogs in my procrastination. You may or may not be interested in my NP post on Arthurian fanfic and medieval tradition. Iris, I did as I threatened and rec'd you with the highest praise ;).

YAAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY, well done!!

This must call for some kind of celebration.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes... I'm having a special amy sort of celebration, known as cuddling a mug of tea and beta-ing someone's Edmund-centric fic. Because Edmund is the best antidote to everything, but I haven't the brain to write anything further myself right now.

YOU USED MY ICON!

GLEE!

And also, I concur with that post. It's how I view mythology in general, actually, and is why I have no problem in RPing Mordred or Morgan or Medusa or Kore-Persephone as I do.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I did. I take it that's ok?

It's how I view mythology in general, actually, and is why I have no problem in RPing Mordred or Morgan or Medusa or Kore-Persephone as I do.

One day, when I'm a SMART PERSON, 'm gonna teach a course on fantasy lit which will start with medieval romances and move through to fanfic, and will involve a lot of blather about evolving mythology and cultural adaptation.

*jazz hands* ignore the journal, I am Ashie and too lazy to sign out

[identity profile] sixlittleseeds.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's FINE! *grins* Mordred is my baby, and he used to say that a lot.

It's utterly fascinating, really. I didn't do that kind of research with Mordred or Morgan so much, but with Kore-Seph and Medusa? Oh, yes.

(although, the girls can get very, very loud in my head when they disagree *rolls eyes at her characters*)

I know the feeling. I keep using the wrong account in the wrong place, and it is unforunate.

There IS a button at the bottom of the post box called 'more options' which will let you reply from another account, though. But that would be defeating the purpose of laziness.

[identity profile] blackbuttoneyes.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! That is a wondrous thing to have done.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

[identity profile] tarimanveri.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! Your numbers indicate that it's an impressive piece of work (for comparative purposes, my thesis text was a modest 12 995 words long). I recommend celebratory sleep, and lots of it.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, a further 30% of my assessment is due in essays in the next month, so celebratory sleep may be in short supply.

congrats

[identity profile] daiskmeliadorn.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
... it is?? you have a strange system over there. where by strange i mean different from the one we had :)

but yes. well done!

Re: congrats

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Thesis 40%, classwork 60%, spread evenly over two semesters. Although I think I've already got around 20% one class out of the way. Subtract 20% of 15% from 30% of 100%... *dies*

Congratulations! It's a damned fine feeling. Handing in the final version feels even better, if you can believe it.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
For one thing, I intend to be less catatonically tired when I hand the final version in.

That reminds me, must make appointment with the binding place.

[identity profile] goblinpaladin.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! Don't forget the cathartic 'burn all the drafts' process after you hand it in next week.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
*stares blankly at you*

burn.

the drafts.

burn. the drafts.

*cuddles them protectively*

GLEE!! Congratulations on getting a finished version. Good luck with the editing, and have some mead to make the brain stop hurting!

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
mmm... mead... I haven't had mead for nearly a year.... *considers*

[identity profile] anachronisma.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Many congratulations on having written a thesis!

If only you could lend me some of your verbiage to write about 16th century poetry and explain why Edmund Spenser pwns Shakespeare in the sonnet department. ....in the next 2 hours.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
If I had read ANY 16th century poetry, aside from Shakespeare, I might have some verbiage to lend you... :P

[identity profile] anachronisma.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it so much. XD I want to go back to the medieval period.

You already know, but

HOOORAY! CONGRATULATIONS!

*tacklehugs you very gently, because of sleep deprivation*

*passes you a big mug of tea*

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, thankee :)

I drank all my tea. And ate all my allotted tim-tams.

But I'm about to post evidence of the nesting habits of the Thesis Bird ;)

[identity profile] niamh-sage.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Good on you! :D That must feel pretty damn good :D

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
It does, although I'm now catatonic with exhaustion :s

[identity profile] tranquillita.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations!

I don't think I could ever write a thesis. I like my sleep too much. I've had 9 hours of it over the past two nights (blasted Sociology essay) and I already wish I could sleep for a week. Alas, two more essays and an exam to go...

Also I don't think I could write 20,000+ words for something worth 40% o_O

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* the 40% is proportionate- and it's technically 15-20 000, so I could've gone under if I wanted.

The 30% each semester adds up to two 6-8000 word essays or equivalent (so there's at least 12 000 words) AND 150-300 lines of poetry translation or 1-2000 lines of reading a week.

The thesis breaks down to 10 000 words a semester... it's probably equal to two of your undergrad classes ;). It's a fair distribution of percentage points to word limit, I think, although I do have more classes (and therefore my thesis is worth less) than, say, a history student.

Eh, I get plenty of sleep. Just at the wrong end of the day, since my productive working hours at the beginning of the year were 6pm-2am, and now they're 9pm-4am... I sleep all day and write at night. This doesn't bode well for things like going to class, or getting exercise or eating regular meals, but I *do* get sleep!

[identity profile] tranquillita.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose. I just don't like the look of all those 0s.

And hey, I like my undergrad classes =P I like only having to write 2-3,000 word essays, even though I struggle with them a lot of the time. I just don't think I'm cut out for academia =P

Also, my productive hours are pretty much the same. Thus the whole lack of sleep over the weekend thing. Go nocturnal essay-writers =]

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
All those 0s are nicely spread out over the year, though... it's not so bad.

But then, I picked MDST BECAUSE it had the longest word limit AND a high class load. Clearly, I am mad.

Pssht, who needs sleep? Sleep is for the weak, etc.

[identity profile] highlyeccentric.livejournal.com 2008-10-20 08:22 am (UTC)(link)

So noted, and I give you my highest thanks! It's a good post; I'll have to read those other pieces you cite when I'm not bogged down with teaching prep.
