* That setting up in a library or other studious location will perforce jolt the brain into some semblance of studiousness, even in the face of fourth-year-itis. It remains to be seen what happens when the library fills up at the end of semester and my search-and-destroy typing methods drive everyone batty.
* That you really do use your left hand more when typing. Whaddya know?
*That making plans and having short-term goals is really, really important, in the absence of frequent undergraduate assessments.
* That nine months is NOT a long time in which to write a thesis.
*That I am going to DIE in the month of June.
* That the Bocera thinks I should apply for PHDs to start next year, and then defer if I REALLY think I’m burnt out, but “no one does anything in the first year of a PHD anyway”.
*That said Bocera is going on holiday commencing two weeks before my thesis is due, and coming back just on the due date. Current plan is, this will force me to have the thing finished early. Suspected outcome is, Awesome takes over final editing and/or crisis control.

I have until mid-August to write mine. Eeeeeee.

I think the year off is a good idea. While I'm not happy about getting rejected from 5/6 schools so far, I suspect the universe might be trying to tell me something about my lifestyle and the dangerous situation of my sanity.

I want TWO years off, so the apply/deffer plan isn't quite so practical...

I agree. There's no harm in waiting, and you can make your applications SUPERAWESOME

I very much doubt USyd would reject me. The Bocera's plan is that I should apply here, do a year and a half on the Aus. govt's dollar, and then bugger off and start again somewhere respectable :)

Apparently, due to a statistical anomaly in the new scholarships process, it is drastically easier to get an Arts PHD scholarship at USyd at the moment than a Science one. The Bocera thinks the Sciencists will demand a review ASAP and if I leave it a few years I'll have much more trouble.

Nice! I guess as long as you keep abreast of the scientists' plans to shake things up and apply slightly ahead of theie shenanigans, you should be okay. Do you have any ideas where you would want to go after that?

Nice! Toronto has a kickin' program. I may apply there next time around, too.

do, do!

i doubt we'll get to be Torontonian Phud-buddies, wot with me needing time off uni and then needing to do an MA here and/or start a PHD here first, but maybe in your final year... :) Twould be nice.

Perhaps! It would be nice. Given that I won't be applying till 2009 we would overlap a tad. IF they took me. As long as I don't become one of those lifelind PhD candidates, outlasting their funding by years, never quite finishing the thesis....(shudder)

if so, i'll start addressing you as Ms Slackerny :P

I guess I'll be applying in 2011 at the earliest... so some overlap isn't inconcievable.
Failing that, the American continent isn't too big a place. I will track you down and engage in medievalist quaffing.

sigh. york is great. only they don't have huge amounts of funding, unless you're working on an already established project. have you thought about doing a masters in the uk? pretty much like doing honours all over again but it's a lot of fun and also makes it a lot easier to get funding...

The problem would be getting the funding for the masters!
I've seen the programs, though, so I'll definitely apply for whatever i stand a chance of scholarships for :)

oh, and of course the commonwealth scholarships fund masters as well as phds, and the competition for the masters may be easier. i got into the final round for that for funding for my masters as well, but i never found out whether i would have got it or not because i had to pull out when i heard about my other funding... when it came to apply for phd funding i didn't make it into the last round for the commonwealth scholarships, but i got a combination of funding from leeds and the orsas awards instead...
