Queer theory is awesome.
I take back the sweeping general condemnations of Theory, generally, and re-issue them with the caveat bad theory. GOOD theory reassures you that you are not mad for finding bondage jokes in Sir Gawain.1 GOOD theory also provides you with cultural analysis lines down which you can take your non-salacious grammatical study.
BETTER theory would've said more about transgressive *female* sexuality instead of tying it all up with male-male desire. But hey, one can't have everything.
1. Someone has written an article entitled 'Anal Rope'. I must hie me to Fisher and, ah, pin it down.

I don't buy his 'chivalry is based on repressed homosexuality' thing, though, which was probably the POINT of the argument...

Date: 2008-05-19 11:52 pm (UTC)well i reckon you just haven't found the good feminists... hehe. although actually queer theory is one direction that a lot of feminists have gone in. it could be that the feminist theory you've seen was out of date? it's funny how old theory can just seem totally stupid now, whereas it actually didn't seem that way then...
on the question of "repressed sexuality" i reckon you could find some interesting theorists challenging that interpretation, if not in your period, then in another one and the argument could potentially be adapted to your period. i have a feeling Stuff Like That is Out There Somewhere :)
