what's the difference between what just happened in california and what's happened in... that other US state that has gay marriage? is it that the other one legislated for it, whereas in this one i think it was judges ruling that the ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional?
also with the canadian church: hazaa! but i don't know what to think about that kind of thing in the anglican church... when i should support US etc people pushing gay stuff forward and whether maybe there is an argument that they shouldn't... um... i'm not very educated on this actually... and seeing as you are an anglican church watcher, want to summarise it for me? :)
I believe the other state legislated for it; this one, it was based on a judicial interpretation of the constitution, which can and probably will be overturned by someone changing the constitution to specifically exclude same-sex marriage rights.

I guess it depends on how highly you rate the unity of the Anglican Communion.
The thing with Anglicans, too, is that congregations don't call their ministers, they get appointed. Which means that a congregation *could* be in a position of being 'forced' to accept a gay/female/other dangerous persuasion minister. And while you tend to want to tell people just to suck it up, forcing change doesn't make people change their *minds*.
Whereas with the UCA, and I assume with this Lutheran congregation in Canada, the *congregation* call the minister, and so no matter what the decision at the top, no congregation is forced to take on a minister they can't in conscience live with. Bad, perhaps, for short-term change, but I reckons there's a higher prospect of solid long term changethat way.
hey, we anglicans don't exactly have ministers forced on us, although that can happen. in most cases slash in theory at least it's a joint committee of people from the parish and people from the diocese and they're meant to agree on a person together. well that's what happens in sydney anyway. i think that in most cases where a church was having a minister forced onto them, that wouldn't go down too well, and probably wouldn't be terribly good for the congregation? (although possibly good for the diocese's Cunning Plans) (i think what i'm trying to say is the real problem with that scenario is the diocese not working well with the church...?) (so yeah the big question re gay stuff is the value of the anglican communion. you're right. i haven't quite worked that out yet) (i like writing in parentheses)
Well yes, obviously the diocese would be Very Stupid if they appointed a gay minister over a conservative church. But they have, set up in the church structure, the *power* to do so, and so it's understandably scary for the conservatives...
meanwhile. i am the only one at home, even the cat has been locked in the back room because she was vomiting all morning (ON MY BED!!!!!!) and i am BORED AND HAVE NO-ONE TO TALK TO EXCEPT THE INTERNET (and my thesis). *sob*
seriously, i have hardly spoken to anyone (in person) except my housemates for ages, it seems.... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh slowly going maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.....
p.s. in case you have been fretting about me (and i'm sure you have been), just thought i'd let you know that i am now HAPPY having phoned my granny and had a lovely chat! :D
No one to talk to is a terrible state of affairs. When do you hand the blasted thing in? We should have another study date like thing, in the interests of you not going man?
I like question marks?
Also, phoning granny sounds like a wonderful option. Wish I had helpful and reassuring grandparents.
yes very eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. but on the plus side she hasn't pooed in the shower *all day*! even though she was locked out the back - usually she seems to take revenge by pooing in the shower when she's stuck out there.
it's due on 29 may - i'd love a study date but suspect i might get more done if i stay home :(
who knows, going mad could be fun? (and of course going 'man' is my aim in life :P )
well, if you ever need it, i'm happy to pretend to be your granny. i'll tell you all about how my body is falling to pieces! actually it sounds pretty sucky, the whole being old and everything just stops working thing... although at least granny did seem quite cheery. are your grandparents still around, or just grumpy?
you're dimming my enthusiasm for all things feline.
true, true. and one's efforts at masculinity are no doubt increased by avoiding Women's College ;)
yes, I still have a full complement of grandparents. (well, actually, one grandfather hasn't been seen since before mum was born, so he doesn't count) One grandmother is grumpy, paranoid and insular. The other is grumpy, and foul in every respect. The grandfather is lovely, but is not allowed to answer telephones, thanks to paranoid grandmother. They've got to the separate bedrooms stage, after fifty bloody year's of marriage.
NO! the poor thing is the VICTIM of a STUPID internet FAD! she'll be teased mercilessly at school! be ashamed when she's an old cat and the internet has moved on!
oh, btw, I now know that my entire immediate family knows I'm not straight. I was sort of outed to my brother at lunch today, but he already knew because he'd seen my answer to the "Interrested in" question on my Facebook profile.
seeing as no-one else has replied to you i'm going to take it upon myself to say, "hoorah!"
i love coming out to people via facebook! although the matter is probably confused a little because it says i'm in an open relationship with an old friend when clearly i'm not.
Sadly, New Zealand has even fewer jobs for Anglo-Saxonists than does Australia. Sigh.
There was a time (I can't remember what was happening in Australian politics, something depressing) when we'd all sit at the table at breakfast on Saturday and stare despondantly at the paper before announcing that we were all moving to New Zealand. We did this every week for a good couple of months...
Yes, a friend who had lived in both America *and* New Zealand thought the whole process was hilarious reminiscent of the I'm-Moving-To-Canada-Phenomenon. Which didn't stop her declaring that she intends to sit for the Bar in New Zealand rather than Australia ;)

My grandparents are all mad. My great-grandmother, by all accounts, was a saint, but then, she's dead, many dead people were fabulous.
